Philemon & Baucis
Φιλήμων, Βαῦκις
The one household that took the strangers in.
Zeus and Hermes walked the village in human form, and not one house would open its door.
Only the poorest old couple tried to kill their one goose for the guests — so the gods spared their house alone and drowned the village.
Asked for a wish, they wanted only to die on the same day — and they became an oak and a linden, standing side by side.
