discord · eristic
conflict; contentious arguing
Today this word meansA falling-out. Eristic: argument waged only to win.
Discordia is the Roman name of Eris, goddess of strife.
Eristic comes straight from Greek eris (strife) and referred to the disputation of the Sophists.
Worth noting
Discord itself is a compound of Latin dis- (apart) + cor (heart). It shares a root with the goddess's name rather than deriving from it.
