hecatomb
a hundred oxen; a slaughter
Today this word meansSacrifice or slaughter on an enormous scale.
Hekaton (hundred) + bous (ox): a great sacrifice of a hundred oxen.
The first element is the same word as in Hecatoncheires, the Hundred-Handed.
Whether exactly a hundred were ever counted out, it meant "a sacrifice of tremendous scale" — and the meaning has since tilted toward catastrophe.
