hermeneutics
the art of interpretation
Today this word meansThe discipline concerned with how to read out the meaning of texts.
Greek hermēneus means "interpreter" — exactly the job of Hermes, carrying the words of gods to humans.
It began in biblical interpretation and became a branch of philosophy in the twentieth century.
Worth noting
The derivation from Hermes was claimed in antiquity, but it is not etymologically settled. Some hold that name and word merely resemble each other by chance.
