lunatic
insane person (now offensive)
Today this word meansA person of unsound mind — a word best avoided today.
From Luna, goddess of the Moon. There was a belief that the mind wavered as the Moon waxed and waned.
English loony shares the root.
Worth noting
Strongly contemptuous and avoided in modern English. Know it for the etymology, nothing more.
