Aegina

Αἴγινα

Mother of Aeacus, who left her name on the island Zeus carried her to.

She is a daughter of the river god Asopus. Zeus, in the form of an eagle, carried her to the island of Oenone, and the island has been called Aegina ever since.

It was Sisyphus who told the searching Asopus that the culprit was Zeus — in exchange for a spring for Corinth. One version counts this betrayal as the reason Sisyphus earned the gods' wrath.

Her son Aeacus became king of the island. Aegina is later reckoned the first place in Greece to strike silver coins — a nymph's name traveled all of Greece on money.
