Aeacus

Αἰακός

Achilles' grandfather, counted the most pious of mortals — and made a judge of the underworld after death.

Son of Zeus and the nymph Aegina, he was king of the island that bears his mother's name.

When a plague sent by Hera wiped out his people, he watched an ant colony on an oak and prayed for that many subjects; Zeus turned the ants into people — the Myrmidons, "ant people." They later became the army his grandson Achilles led.

When drought struck all of Greece, he was the one chosen to pray for rain. Plato seats him as a judge of the underworld alongside Minos and Rhadamanthys.

His sons were Peleus and Telamon — Achilles and Ajax are this house's grandsons.
