Agamemnon

Ἀγαμέμνων

The king of Mycenae who commanded the Greek alliance.

To win the winds that would carry his fleet, he sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia.

His seizing of Achilles' war-prize, driving the hero from the battlefield, is what sets the Iliad in motion.

He returned in triumph after ten years — and was murdered that same day by his wife Clytemnestra, in revenge for their daughter's death.

The gold mask Schliemann found at Mycenae and named "the Mask of Agamemnon" dates more than three hundred years too early — the current consensus is that it has nothing to do with him.
