Orestes
Ὀρέστης
The son of Agamemnon who killed his mother to avenge his father.
On Apollo's command he killed his mother Clytemnestra and her lover — and was hounded at once by the Furies.
Aeschylus' trilogy, the Oresteia, ends with his trial in an Athenian court, and his acquittal.
It is the story of the moment blood-for-blood gave way to trial by jury — one of the greatest themes Greek tragedy left behind.
