Antinous
Ἀντίνοος
First among the 108 suitors who devoured another man's house and coveted its mistress.
During the twenty years Odysseus was gone, the young nobles of Ithaca pressed Penelope to remarry while eating and drinking their way through the king's house. The richest and most arrogant of them was Antinous.
It was he who first proposed the plot to murder Telemachus, and he who hurled a footstool at Odysseus disguised as a beggar.
On the day of the archery contest, just as he raised a cup to his lips, Odysseus's first arrow went through his throat. The revenge began with him.

He is often confused with "Antinous," the beautiful youth beloved of the Roman emperor Hadrian, whose name is spelled the same in Greek. That Antinous was a real historical person, with no connection to this suitor in the Odyssey.
