Arcadia
Ἀρκαδία
The idyll of shepherds and the sound of Pan's pipes.
It is a real mountain region in the heart of the Peloponnese — barren and remote, so the old ways lingered.
After Virgil painted it as a paradise of poets and herdsmen in the Eclogues, European literature inherited that image ever after.
It is the home of Pan — and also the place where Lycaon was turned into a wolf.
Commonly confused
The painted motto "Et in Arcadia ego" ("I too was in Arcadia") is not praise of paradise. The prevailing reading is that the speaker is Death — meaning that even in paradise, death is present.
