Pan

Πάν · Roman 파우누스 (Faunus)

The goat-legged god of the fields.

Goat from the waist down, with horns on his head, he protected shepherds and flocks — and guarded his midday naps jealously.

The sudden, reasonless dread that strikes in the woods at high noon the Greeks called "the fear of Pan." That is where panic comes from.

When the nymph Syrinx fled him and became a bed of reeds, he cut and bound the reeds into a flute — the panpipes.

Commonly confused

He has nothing to do with the pan- of panorama and pandemic. This Pan is a god's name; that pan is Greek for "all."
