Arethusa
Ἀρέθουσα
A nymph who fled a river god by becoming a spring.
Chased by the river god Alpheus while bathing, she was wrapped in mist by Artemis and turned into a spring.
The earth split open, and she flowed beneath the sea all the way to Sicily, rising again at Syracuse.
Alpheus, they say, followed her under the sea as a river — and in the end his waters mingled with her spring.
