Demeter

Δημήτηρ · Roman 케레스 (Ceres)

The mother goddess who makes grain grow from the earth.

When her daughter Persephone was carried off by Hades, she sank into grief and neglected the land — and the world saw its first famine.

Because her daughter had eaten a few pomegranate seeds below, she had to return underground for part of each year. That season is winter.

She was the central goddess of the Eleusinian Mysteries, whose initiates swore never to reveal what they saw — which is why, to this day, no one knows exactly what happened there.
