The wife Orpheus led out of the underworld — and lost again.
Not long after her wedding, she was bitten by a snake in a meadow and died.
Orpheus sang Hades into letting him take her back — on the condition that he not look behind until they reached the upper world.
A few steps from the light, he turned. Virgil writes that she vanished with only a "farewell" on her lips.
