Gordius

Γόρδιος

Father of Midas, who founded a dynasty with a cart and left his name on a knot.

When Phrygia was torn by civil strife, an oracle said a cart would bring them a king. Just then the farmer Gordius drove into the city with his family on a cart.

According to Arrian, the one the Phrygians made king was his son Midas, who was riding on that cart. A separate version has Gordius himself becoming king.

The cart the royal house dedicated was bound with a knot, and word attached to it: whoever untied it would rule Asia. Centuries later Alexander is said to have cut it with his sword — or pulled the pin from the cart and unraveled the whole thing — Arrian set down both versions side by side.
