Icarus

Ἴκαρος

The boy who flew on wax wings too close to the sun.

He escaped Crete on wings of feathers and wax built by his father, Daedalus.

He was warned that flying too low would soak the wings and flying too high would melt the wax — but drunk on the sky, he climbed.

The wings melted and he fell into the sea, which is called the Icarian Sea after him.

Commonly confused

The heart of the warning was not "don't fly high" but "fly the middle course." Flying low was said to be just as dangerous.
