Oedipus
Οἰδίπους
A king whose attempts to escape a prophecy made it come true.
Because of the oracle "he will kill his father and marry his mother," he was abandoned as a baby and grew up not knowing his birth.
Fleeing home to escape the prophecy, he unknowingly killed his real father on the road and became king of Thebes.
When he learned the truth, he put out his own eyes. Sophocles' Oedipus Rex tells this story.
Freud borrowed the name for his concept of the Oedipus complex.
