Jocasta
Ἰοκάστη
The Theban queen who married the son she had abandoned.
After Laius died, she married Oedipus, the man who defeated the Sphinx, and bore him four children.
In Sophocles' play she is the first to reach the truth — and she begs Oedipus to "ask no more."
When Oedipus pressed on to the end, she went to her chamber and hanged herself. With a pin drawn from her robe, Oedipus put out his own eyes.
