Plouto

Πλουτώ

The nymph who bore Tantalus to Zeus. Her name means "wealth."

Hyginus records Tantalus as "son of Zeus and Plouto." Beyond her name, almost nothing about this nymph survives.

That name shares its root with Plutus, god of wealth: "riches."

Tantalus was a king so rich and so favored that he dined at the table of the gods — a fortune already written, it seems, in his mother's name.

Commonly confused

A different figure from both Pluto, the Roman name of Hades, and Plutus, the god of wealth. All three names spring from the same "riches," so they are constantly confused.
