Argo Navis
the dismantled ship
Today this word meansA constellation that no longer exists. It was split in three.
The Argo, ship of Jason and his heroes — one of the 48 constellations Ptolemy catalogued.
Too large, it was divided in the eighteenth century into Carina, Puppis, and Vela, and the split was locked in when the International Astronomical Union fixed the 88 constellations in 1930.
It is the only ancient constellation ever officially abolished.
