Today this word meansA strange constellation: goat above, fish below.
The story attached to it: when the monster Typhon appeared, the gods fled in animal form, and Pan, half-finished with his dive into the water, ended up fish only from the waist down.
The name itself is Latin for "horned goat."
The goat-fish figure appears in Mesopotamian iconography long before Greece — the Greek tale is a later explanation.
