Draco

the dragon round the pole

Today this word meansA long constellation coiled around the celestial pole.

Identified as Ladon, the dragon that guarded the tree of golden apples when Heracles came for them.

Its brightest star, Thuban, was the pole star around 3000 BC. Observations suggest a passage of the Egyptian pyramids points toward it.

As Earth's axis wobbles, the pole star changes on a 26,000-year cycle — the current North Star is not forever either.
