Hesperus · Vesper

the evening star

Today this word meansVenus, rising in the western sky after sunset.

Hesperus means "evening," and the Hesperides, keepers of the golden apples at the western edge of the world, carry the same word.

The same star at dawn was called Phosphorus, "the light-bringer" — the two were taken for different stars.

Tradition says it was Pythagoras who told the Greeks they were one and the same.

Worth noting

The Latin Vesper survives in evening prayers — vespers. The Korean name Gaebapbaragi points to the same star.
