From justitia, derived from Latin jus (law); the word raised into a goddess became Justitia.
The Greeks split the idea in two: Themis for the whole order of norms, Dike for the verdict in each case.
The scale-bearing goddess outside courthouses descends from this lineage.

Her blindfold is not ancient. It first appears in a sixteenth-century engraving, and the leading interpretation is that it began as mockery.
