museum
place for collections
Today this word meansA place where artifacts and artworks are gathered, kept, and shown.
A place dedicated to the Muses was called a Mouseion.
The Mouseion of Alexandria was closer to what we would call a research institute — not a place for display, but a place where scholars gathered to work.
