Olympic
the quadrennial games
Today this word meansThe international games held every four years.
The ancient festival at Olympia was a rite offered to Zeus. 776 BC is counted as the first games.
For the duration, a truce among the city-states — the ekecheiria — halted their wars.
What Coubertin revived at Athens in 1896 is today's Olympics.
Worth noting
The games were held not on Mount Olympus, home of the gods, but at Olympia in the Peloponnese. The two are more than 400 km apart.
