panic
sudden overwhelming fear
Today this word meansSudden, uncontrollable fear.
When terror struck for no reason in the midday woods, the Greeks blamed the goat-god Pan.
They called that feeling panikon deima, "the fear Pan sends." That is where panic comes from.
Worth noting
Not the pan ("all") of pandemic and panorama — this one is the god's name.
