tragedy
the goat-song
Today this word meansA story whose hero comes to ruin. And any devastating event.
Greek tragōidia is tragos (goat) + ōidē (song) — the "goat-song."
It began with the plays staged at the festivals of Dionysus.
Worth noting
Why the goat has been argued since antiquity: a goat as the prize, a goat sacrificed while the song was sung, or a chorus dressed as goat-shaped satyrs. None of it is settled.
