Minos
Μίνως
A king who ruled the seas — and judged the dead after death.
To prove his right to the throne, he prayed to Poseidon for a bull — then failed to sacrifice it, and was cursed.
The price was the Minotaur, whom he had Daedalus lock away in the Labyrinth.
After death, he became one of the three judges of the dead in the underworld.

Calling Cretan civilization "Minoan" is the doing of Evans, the excavator who named it after this king in the early 20th century. What that civilization called itself, we still do not know.
