The Athenian king who threw himself into the sea at the sight of a black sail.
Father of Theseus — when his son sailed for Crete, they agreed he would hoist a white sail if he returned alive.
Theseus killed the Minotaur, but forgot to change the sail.
Seeing the black sail, Aegeus threw himself into the sea — the sea called the Aegean after him.
