Amazons

Ἀμαζόνες

A tribe of warrior women said to have built a nation without men.

They were believed to live somewhere east of the Black Sea. Heracles's ninth labor was to fetch their queen's girdle.

In the Trojan War, their queen Penthesilea fought on the Trojan side and died at the hands of Achilles.

Long dismissed as pure fantasy — until Scythian graves north of the Black Sea yielded numerous women warriors buried with their weapons.
