Anticlea
Ἀντίκλεια
The mother who died waiting for her son, and met Odysseus only in the underworld.
She was the daughter of Autolycus, master of thieves. Autolycus is said to be a son of Hermes — so Odysseus's cunning runs in the family on his mother's side.
She died of longing while waiting for her son's return, and Odysseus learns it only when he meets her shade at the threshold of the underworld.
Three times he tried to embrace her, the Odyssey records, and three times she slipped through his arms like a shadow.
