Laertes

Λαέρτης

Odysseus's father, who made his son prove himself by counting the trees.

The old king of Ithaca. While his son wandered through war and voyage for twenty years, he left the palace and dug the earth in his orchard.

In the final reunion scene of the Odyssey, Odysseus proves himself by naming the trees his father once counted out to him as a boy — thirteen pear trees, ten apple trees, forty fig trees.

If the scar was the password that worked on his nurse, the trees were the password that worked on his father.
