Autolycus

Αὐτόλυκος

Son of Hermes and king of thieves, who personally named Odysseus.

The Odyssey introduces him as one who "surpassed all men in thievery and the oath." The talent came from his father Hermes. He is said to have changed the color and brands of what he stole so no one could recognize it.

He also named his grandson — since he had lived earning the anger of many, let the child be called "Odysseus," the one who receives wrath.

The scar that Odysseus got hunting boar at his grandfather's home on Parnassus became, twenty years later, the mark by which his nurse knew him.

According to Ovid, his mother Chione conceived children of two gods on the same day — Autolycus, son of Hermes, and Philammon, son of Apollo. One became a thief, the other a singer.
