Cinyras
Κινύρας
The king of Cyprus who was deceived by his daughter and became the father of Adonis.
King of Cyprus, a priest-king bound up with the temple of Aphrodite at Paphos.
Ovid tells that his daughter Myrrha, gripped by a cursed love, came to her father with her identity hidden — and so Adonis was conceived.
When Cinyras brought in a lamp and learned the truth, he drew his sword; Myrrha fled and became the myrrh tree. The child Aphrodite would come to love split the bark of that tree and emerged.
