Clymene
Κλυμένη
The mother who told her son, asking if his father was truly the sun, to go where the sun rises and see.
She was the wife of Merops, king of Ethiopia, but her son Phaethon she bore to the sun god.
When her son, wounded by Epaphus's taunt, demanded the truth, Clymene swore by the sun and added — if you doubt it, go to the place of sunrise and ask him yourself. That answer put her son in the sun's chariot.
She roamed the whole world searching for her fallen son's bones, and his sisters — the Heliades — weeping beside the grave by the river, became poplars that shed amber as tears.

Not the same as the Oceanid Clymene, mother of Prometheus and his brothers. Following Hesiod and Ovid, this encyclopedia treats them as different figures.
