Lacedaemon
Λακεδαίμων
Sparta's founder, who gave the land his own name and the city his wife's.
He was born of Zeus and Taygete, one of the Pleiades.
He married Sparta, daughter of the river god Eurotas, and according to Pausanias gave the land his own name (Lacedaemon) and the city his wife's (Sparta).
The Taygetus range overlooking Sparta bears his mother's name. Mother as mountain, wife as city, himself as land — a whole family turned into a map.
