She is the daughter of Eurotas, god of the river that flows through the Spartan plain.

She married Lacedaemon, and her husband gave the new city his wife's name.

Her father remained as a river, her husband as a land, and she as a city. It is easily forgotten that one of the most famous cities in Greece bears a queen's name.
