Philyra

Φιλύρα

The nymph who bore Chiron to Cronus in horse form, then turned into a linden tree.

According to Apollonius, Cronus took the form of a horse to dodge the eyes of his wife Rhea when he lay with Philyra. That is why Chiron was born half man, half horse.

Hyginus tells that Philyra, horrified by the strange shape of her infant, begged the gods — and became a linden tree. Her very name is Greek for linden.

Chiron is also called Philyrides, "son of the linden." The mother survives in the title of the wisest of the centaurs.
