Thebes
Θῆβαι
The city where more tragedy struck than anywhere else in myth.
Cadmus founded it by sowing dragon's teeth; Amphion raised its walls by playing the lyre.
It is the birthplace of Dionysus and Heracles — and the place where Oedipus and Antigone fell.
One reading holds that Athenian tragedy set its plays in Thebes rather than Athens because only in someone else's city could a king's ruin be shown without restraint.
The real city was razed to the ground in 335 BC by Alexander, as the price of rebellion.
