He is a mortal Demeter loved. According to Hesiod, they lay together in a thrice-plowed field in Crete, and there the wealth god Plutus was born.
The goddess of grain, a plowed field, and wealth — the whole genealogy is a metaphor for farming.
In the Odyssey, Calypso protests that Zeus killed him with a thunderbolt. When a goddess loves a mortal, she argues, it always ends this way.
