Taygete
Ταϋγέτη
The Pleiad who fled Zeus as a doe. Sparta's mountain range bears her name.
One of the seven Pleiades, she is sister to Maia, mother of Hermes.
A follower of Artemis, she was pursued by Zeus, and the goddess hid her by turning her into a doe. Restored to human form, Pindar sings, Taygete dedicated a golden-horned deer to the goddess in thanks — the very Ceryneian hind Heracles later had to capture alive.
In the end she bore Lacedaemon to Zeus, and the Taygetus range overlooking Sparta received her name.
